Ahmed is crafting a 90-acre, 10-field cricket complex off Highway 290, poised to become the largest cricket facility in the United States. This ambitious project is more than just a collection of fields; it represents the dreams and aspirations of a rapidly growing cricket community in Southeast Texas. For the Houston Cricket League’s President, Iqra Farooqui, this complex is nothing short of a game changer.
“We have over 30 teams that play in the Houston area, but we just don’t have enough fields. This facility will allow us to play and help grow the game,” Farooqui said with a mix of excitement and relief, as reported by Jake Kobersky of KBTX.
For Ahmed, this venture is deeply personal. Born in Pakistan, where cricket is woven into the fabric of daily life, he cherished the sport from a young age. However, after moving to the United States, cricket took a backseat as he focused on building his career. But in 2016, a casual invitation from colleagues reignited his passion, and with it, a stark realization: Houston lacked the infrastructure to support its burgeoning cricket community.
“A few of my co-workers asked me to play with them, and I quickly realized there just weren’t enough fields in Houston,” Ahmed recalls in an interview with Kobersky.
Currently, cricket enthusiasts in Houston have access to just nine fields, spread thinly from Humble to East Bernard. Ahmed’s new Waller County facility will more than double this number, addressing a critical need and setting the stage for cricket’s expansion across the region. But for Ahmed, this project goes beyond sports—it’s a tribute to his mother’s sacrifices and an ode to his roots.
“Whatever she has done for me and my brothers, I owe it to her. So, mom, this is for you,” Ahmed said, his voice filled with emotion, dedicating this field of dreams to the woman who shaped his journey, as quoted by Kobersky.
As construction progresses, this sprawling cricket complex is set to become a beacon of hope and opportunity for a community that has long awaited its own field of dreams.
