The Collective honors 5 outstanding women in the arts

The Community Artists’ Collective (The Collective) recognized five dynamic women in the arts at a ceremony celebrating Women’s History Month.

Michelle Barnes, Dr. Sarah Trotty, Dr. Alvia Wardlaw and Robbie Lee, all of Houston, and Vicki Meek of Dallas were feted at a reception at The Collective’s new home at 4111 Fannin, Suite 100A, Thursday, March 20.

Barnes and Trotty were co-founders of The Collective in 1987 and have guided its growth over the years. Barnes is the executive director of the organization and is an artist and teacher as well. Trotty is a retired associate professor of art and former chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Texas Southern University and is member of The Collective’s board of directors.

Wardlaw is a distinguished scholar in African, African American and contemporary art. A Houston native, she became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Texas in Austin.

Lee is a curator, appraiser, lecture and consultant in African American arts and cultural affairs. A Houston native, she founded the Black Heritage Gallery in 1977 and has served as honorary curator for national organizations.

Meek is a renowned artist, curator and arts administrator known for her powerful work exploring African American history, identity and social justice. She served as manager of the South Dallas Cultural Center for more than 20 years and continues to be an influential voice in the cultural landscape through her art and advocacy.

Each honoree received a commemorative porcelain pin of The Collective’s logo designed and made by artist Zsavon Butler.

The program was hosted by The Collective’s Entrepreneurship Coordinator Merian Sherrod and assisted by The Collective’s Assistant Director April M. Frazier, Exhibition Curator Tamirah Collins and marketing staffers Deniz Lopez and Terry St. John.
