Uber Gains Powerful Ally in Groundbreaking $3.5 Billion Investment

In a landmark transaction that underscores Saudi Arabia’s ambition to diversify its economy, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) has announced a $3.5 billion investment in Uber Technologies. This significant move, part of Uber’s Series G fundraising round, marks one of PIF’s largest international investments to date and reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to Vision 2030, an overarching blueprint for economic transformation.

The investment not only provides Uber with substantial capital to further its global expansion but also positions PIF as a key player in the ride-sharing giant’s future. As part of the agreement, PIF will secure a seat on Uber’s Board of Directors, bringing Saudi perspectives to the forefront of the company’s strategic direction.

H.E. Yasir Al Rumayyan, Managing Director of PIF, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We’re excited to have completed this strategic investment with Uber, an extraordinary company with an inspiring mission. This investment aligns perfectly with our objectives under Vision 2030 to diversify our economy and foster innovation.”

Uber’s CEO and co-founder, Travis Kalanick, also voiced his appreciation for the vote of confidence, saying, “Our experience in Saudi Arabia exemplifies how Uber can positively impact riders, drivers, and cities. We look forward to partnering with the Kingdom to support their economic and social reforms.”

Uber’s presence in the Middle East and North Africa is already significant, serving nine countries and 15 cities, including Riyadh, Jeddah, and Mecca. This partnership with PIF is set to further enhance Uber’s role in transforming urban mobility across the region, while simultaneously advancing Saudi Arabia’s goals of economic diversification, job creation, and increasing women’s participation in the workforce.

The $3.5 billion investment is a pivotal step in Saudi Arabia’s journey towards becoming a global leader in innovation and technology, and it underscores the Kingdom’s resolve to achieve the ambitious goals set forth in Vision 2030.
